In the Quran it says,
“If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.”
–Chapter 4, Verse 3 (Surah 4, Ayah 3)
Now we are going to break this down. First off, EVERYBODY ignores the statement before the part about marrying multiple women. In that day and age, and in this day and age, females orphans were taken advantage of. They were sold or abused or all sorts of awful things. So it was for their sake that the Quran says, Marry more than one so that you can take care of them and help them.
This verse is telling Men that in order to help the Orphans, marry up to four. But then it goes on to say, If you fear that you will not be able to deal justly with them, then only one.
Remember that as we move on to the next verse.
Now still in Chapter 4, but Verse 129 it goes on to say,
“Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire: But turn not away (from a woman) altogether, so as to leave her (as it were) hanging (in the air). If ye come to a friendly understanding, and practise self-restraint, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.”
Now it’s saying, YOU CAN’T!!!! You are NEVER able to be fair and just between women. But don’t turn away from them altogether. Basically, you can’t handle four, but you can still have one.
So this next verse, one of the most beautiful verses ever states
“Allah has not made for any man two hearts in his (one) body”
So even if you marry 2 women, you will NEVER be able to love both equally, as we have only one heart. That is from Chapter 33, Verse 4.
(via) i just found this super interesting.
